This is used by commercial barrel makers around the world,to smooth the inside of freshly cut barrels. The flat micro-platesof synthetic sapphire are only 30 microns in average diameter,and are suspended in an oil-based solution to provide self-lubrication as they are pushed through the barrel on a tightlap. The flat plates tend to compact together to take up aslittle room as they can under pressure, which aligns theirflat or non-cutting side with the barrel and points their edgesdirectly at any burrs, tool marks, or other projections that stickout above the average barrel surface.
